I spotted this interesting nugget this morning. Figured I’d document it for myself and share. Looks like Ubuntu (even with 7.10) is changing the APM settings for harddrives to be uber-aggressive — I mean the most aggressive it can be. The setting is found in /etc/acpi/power.sh:
When switching to battery power, /etc/acpi/power.sh [...]

Tonight, there was the first sizable earthquake in a long while that freaked me out.  It was a big jolt, then a lot of rolling.  Jacob didn’t make anything of it.  Eileen said she felt dizzy from all the rolling motion.  Everything in the house (walls included) looked like it was rolling up and [...]

New Watch

Thank you honey for the new Casio G-Shock GW-700BDJ-2! It is really cool! Tough Solar, Wave-Ceptor, metal bracelet, cool dark blue highlights, and very (very) cool reversed display.
It is the cooler brother of my Casio G-Shock MTG900DA-8V (also a gift from my awesome wife).

Slow SSH in Ubuntu 7.10

This is just a note to myself about ssh in Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbons).  When I was ssh’ing to different hosts, I noticed that it took forever.  To fix this, edit /etc/ssh_config and change:
GSSAPIAuthentication yes
to
GSSAPIAuthentication no
Not sure why that is turned on by default, but it was definitely the cause of my ssh slowdowns.

Ubuntu 7.10

Sooooooo…
Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) was released a few days ago and I just had to try it. Maybe, just maybe this was the winner. I have been running Scientific Linux 5.0 for the last few months — and have been quite happy with it. It was stable, had all the stuff [...]

I was reading this posting from JR about Netflix and their streaming video service Watch Now. JR was seemingly replying to this posting where the dude is encouraging people to kill trees in order to shout silently at a company. The dude wants people to print out little protest notices and stuff [...]
