Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

March 31, 2016

So, I watched Batman v Superman and it was better than I thought it would be. But, not as good as anything Marvel has put out on their side of the comic cinematic universe.

Best thing about the film:

  • Wonder Woman! Holy hell DC, you guys have missed the boat with this character and not making a movie about her. She is awesome. Gal Gadot is fantastic as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman. The movie was pretty drab and boring until she arrived.

The decent stuff about the film:

  • The Bruce Wayne/Alfred relationship is excellent – they have a relationship that shows that they have been working together for a while and a shorthand when it comes to communication. Alfred has a tired and weary acceptance of what Bruce Wayne does. Jeremy Irons is awesome as Alfred.
  • Ben Affleck as Batman? Actually not that bad! Better than Clooney and Kilmer (though, I guess you don't have to try hard to be better than them). Christian Bale was a good all around Bruce Wayne and Batman (although, I could never get past the Batman voice). Michael Keaton was a great Bruce Wayne. Affleck is good as both Wayne and Batman, but I think the writers did not give him a good enough character to work with. Batman is written as an angry man who lets his anger cloud his better judgment about Superman. At times Batman is also pretty cruel – branding criminals? Yikes.
  • The Batman fight scene late in the movie (that is partially spoiled by the trailer) is mind-blowingly good. OMG.
  • The Batmobile and Batwing are pretty cool. The armored Batsuit is also really cool.
  • The score by Hans Zimmer and Junkie XL is decent and fits the movie well.

The not so good stuff about the film:

  • Superman is boring. Snoring boring.
  • The film itself is also boring. Snoring boring. And drab. And depressing. And dark. And no fun at all. Imagine taking your fist and punching yourself in the face for two and a half hours. This movie is just a little bit more fun than that.
  • The political aspect of the film was completely unnecessary. I am pretty sure if they cut out that whole thread in the film, the running time of the film would have been at two hours instead of two and a half hours.

The ugliest thing of the film:

  • Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. It just doesn't work. His fast talking and twitching. No, just no.
  • Zack Snyder is great at putting up images on screen. Outside of that, he's a terrible director. On par with Michael Bay. Snyder can't tell a good story to save his life. His and the writers overuse of dream sequences is just lazy.
