The Enterprise encounters a mysterious planet that shows up out of nowhere. In an attempt to move away from the planet for further study, Sulu and Kirk disappear from the bridge.
First episode after a break to go down to Universal Studios with the family.

Powerful being on planet storyline.
The Deus Ex Machina ending was a weak way to end this episode. It was like the writers wrote themselves into a corner and didn't have an better way out.
