The Enterprise is arriving at a planet to talk with a John Gill whom the Federation hasn't been able to contact. This was Kirk's instructor. A space craft approaches and is destroyed, it was a thermonuclear warhead. Kirk thinks that Gill has helped civilization.
It's been a long break since the last episode of TOS that I've watched.
A subcutaneous transponder. This is the first time I've seen one of these in Star Trek.
