Wal-Mart Continues to Grow

february 18, 2003

Like a cancer to the retail world, Wal-Mart continues to spread. Wal-Mart announced a 15.5% profit jump for the fourth quarter on $670 million in sales a day -- they earned $2.53 billion dollars in the last quarter. So what does Wal-Mart bring into town? Low prices, right? Not really. In Arkansas, the home state of Wal-Mart a study found that Wal-Mart was the highest priced of all stores. New jobs? Not really. For every two jobs that Wal-Mart created, three were lost from the community because Wal-Mart put local shops out of business. How about the selling of American goods? Nope. 80 to 90% of the goods on Wal-Mart's shelves are made overseas. The kicker for that is in America Wal-Mart sells "Buy American", in Mexico Wal-Mart sells "Buy Mexican", shamelessly playing patriotism for money. How about choice of stuff to buy? Nada. Actually, Wal-Mart has artists create censored editions of their CDs to sell on their shelves to help keep "family values" (of course, that censored CD is sitting right among the ultra-violent R-rated movies and M-rated video games like Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, strange...) So, not so low prices, loss of jobs in your community, loss of jobs in manufacturing here in the States, and hypocrisy, is shopping at Wal-Mart and helping their bottom line really worth it?
