Leap Wireless, Good-Bye

april 23, 2003

Looks like Leap Wireless (who is the mother company to Cricket Wireless) is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Leap, Cricket, and MetroPCS are all companies that sell all-you-can-eat style cell phone services. The only drawback to the service is that it is a local-only phone, so you cannot roam with the phone and you cannot make long distance calls (though MetroPCS sells three hours of long distance for $3/mo). The services are basically made for people who want to replace their home landline with a cell phone. I wonder what implications this will have on MetroPCS and how this reflects on what will eventually happen to MetroPCS.
