Gmail...Expired...

july 4, 2004

Gmail from Google was once the most sought after email account -- with people selling their accounts on Ebay for good amounts of money. But, now Gmail is expired in the eyes of those who want "cool" because Google's competitors have stepped up and offered what Gmail is offereing before Gmail even becomes public. The default Yahoo! Mail accounts now come with 100MB of storage which is still far short of Gmail's 1GB of storage. Hotmail now offers 250MB of free storage for mail. Ask Jeeves and Excite both offer 125MB of storage for mail. Yahoo!, Ask Jeeves, Hotmail and Excite all offer more storage for a cheap price also -- you will get 2GB (twice that of Gmail) for around $20 a year. Even SpyMac (a not so well-known provider outside the Mac community) offers 1GB email accounts for free. That's not bad for email storage. So, I am wondering what Google is going to do about its Gmail now. Not only has it stirred up controversy about its indexing of the users mail, it has now been beat to the open market by its competitors. Gmail feels so expired now...
