Target @ Oakridge Mall

october 10, 2004

The Target at Oakridge Mall finally openned up this weekend! This is the best thing since Target kicks Wal-Mart ass. The Target at Oakridge is two-stories and huge. It is bright and welcoming and the staff there is helpful. My wife and I shopped there today and got the stuff we needed -- it was especially crowded since it was openning weekend. I am glad that the Target openned up to give the Wal-Mart near our house some competition. Don't shop at that evil Wal-Mart. In an August 3rd Reuters article, it has been reported by the UC Berkeley Labor Center that "54 percent of Wal-Mart workers earned less than $9 an hour in 2001, 21 percent made from $9 to $9.99, and 16 percent from $10 to $10.99." So what, you may ask. Well, since Wal-Mart has come into your neighbourhood and driven out the good paying jobs, you are indirectly subsidizing that corporation. How? In the same report it was found that "Wal-Mart workers' reliance on public assistance due to substandard wages and benefits has become a form of indirect public subsidy to the company...Reliance by Wal-Mart workers on public assistance programs in California comes at a cost to the taxpayers of an estimated $86 million annually; this is comprised of $32 million in health related expenses and $54 million in other assistance." Ask yourself how much you like them (not really so) low prices now.
