Napster CEO is the Next Rob Glaser

february 10, 2005

Remember a while back Rob Glaser (CEO of RealNetworks) made an attempt to say that Apple's iPod was a bad thing because it was a closed system? It looks like there's a successor to Glaser's throne as "the guy who stupidly opened his mouth": Chris Gorog, CEO of Napster. Napster is trying to launch their music rental service, and Gorog was pushing the whole "only iPod works with iTunes" issue when he blurted out: "We're going to be communicating to people that it's stupid to buy an iPod." Huh? Not only is he slapping the millions of people who have shown him otherwise in the face by calling them stupid for buying an iPod, but he has also contradicted himself. His Napster software runs only on Microsoft Windows. If you are going to complain about someone else's platform being close and limited, you'd better take a close look at your own platform which is just as closed and limited. Glaser was 2004's most idiotic CEO. I nominate Gorog for 2005! And we're not even two whole months into 2005. I wonder if Gorog has more of his insightful thoughts to share with us throughout the year. What's next Gorog?
