x86 Mac

june 5, 2005

Wired.com is running two articles on Apple's purported move from IBM chips to Intel chips . The second article is quite interesting as the author believes that the move from IBM to Intel is because of the built-in DRM found in the Pentium D chips. This, as the author muses, was dictated by Hollywood to Apple in order for Apple to jump into the digital video distribution business (think iPod Video). Whether this is true or not, the idea behind it is very interesting. Interestingly enough, I was talking with a co-worker last week about the DRM that Intel tried to sneak into its chip. My co-worker mentioned that he is contemplating getting a Mac when he gets a new machine in order to not be strapped down by hardware DRM. If Apple does a move to the Pentium D, I doubt many techies will make any switches from the Windows platform to the Mac platform -- or even buy a new Mac for that matter. We'll just have to wait until tomorrow to find out if all this hubbub about Apple and Intel is true.
