Act of Contrition

july 12, 2005

I am slowly working through the 13 episodes of the first season of Battlestar Galactica. Last night, I watched the two part episode with the first one titled "Act of Contrition". This is the episode where Starbuck admits that she was the cause of Adama's son's death -- she passed his son in flight school because of personal feelings. I know I have been gushing over Battlestar Galactica from the mini-series and the few episodes that I have caught before, but I have got to say that Ronald Moore has really outdone himself with this re-imagining of the show. The casting of Edward James Olmos and Katee Sackhoff were brilliant -- especially the casting of Olmos as Adama. Olmos has shown that he is the heart and soul of the show -- he carries this show with his considerable talent. The writing team for the show also does very well. Instead of some cornball space opera filled with special effects, action, and bad dialogue; they have come up with a top-notch drama set in space. The space setting is not the primary focus of the show, rather the writers are using the space setting as the backdrop for putting characters in good dramatic situations. "Act of Contrition" shows just how well the writing team does. It all boils down to Edward James Olmos and Katee Sackhoff having a very strong scene together, great acting, and awesome writing. The writers, actors and crew found the emotion strings of the audience and pulled them. I look forward to the rest of season one and the start of season two this Friday on the Sci-Fi Channel.
