Steve Jobs, You Gotta Love Him

september 20, 2005

People may say that it is hard working for the brash Steve Jobs, but most of us don't work for him. So, you have to love this guy who is standing up to the music industry. First, he gets his iPod and iTunes popular. Then he gets his iTunes Music Store to a position where he can almost dictate what he wants to do with music. Case in point, recently the greedy (and may I add, idiotic) music executives wanted to boost the 99 cent price per song sold in the iTunes Music Store. Steve Jobs responded to them:

Record companies already make more profit by selling a song through iTunes than on a CD, with all the associated manufacturing and marketing costs, Jobs said. "So if they want to raise the prices it just means they're getting a little greedy," he said. "We're trying to compete with piracy, we're trying to pull people away from piracy and say, `You can buy these songs legally for a fair price,'" he said. "But if the price goes up a lot, they'll go back to piracy. Then everybody loses."
Thank you Jobs for a sanity check for the music execs! I have complained a lot about how greedy the music execs are -- and how they have brought this piracy upon themselves by driving up prices for music. If you make music affordable, then people will buy it. From a previous rant: Water is free from tap, but millions of people still spend millions of dollars buying water. Follow what the water people have been doing and you’ll stop, or slow down the illegal downloading. Quality, quantity, and good prices. That’s all you need music industry folks. I say to record execs: Digital downloads need to be cheaper, not more expensive. You do not have all the overhead of producing a physical CD for digital downloads. Sell a full album for $5.99. Sell a song for 49 cents. You'll make money in quantity. And for crying out loud, put out some good music.
