Another Sickening Reason Not To Shop At Wal-Mart

october 26, 2005

Actually, here are a few sickening reasons not to shop at Wal-Mart. In an internal memo from the VP of "benefits" (!!) to the Wal-Mart board, there are numerous proposals to save the company money. Now, that doesn't sound too bad, all companies want to save money. But, Wal-Mart wants to do it without harming their already bad public image and at the expense of the slaves workers. The memo proposes to save Wal-Mart one billion dollars by hiring more part-time workers and discouraging unhealthy people from seeking jobs. It also proposes that employees pay more for their spouses' health insurance, cutting the company's 401(k) contributions to 3 percent of wages from 4 percent and cutting company-paid life insurance policies. The memo acknowledged 46 percent of the children of Wal-Mart's 1.33 million United States employees were uninsured or on Medicaid -- in other words, while you save that two cents on the toilet cleaner at Wal-Mart, your tax dollars are going to insure families that Wal-Mart doesn't want to pay for. It is sad that most people who stroll into their local Wal-Mart are so focused on the low-prices that they don't realize that in the end: You end up paying anyway. So, lets review here:

For a company that is making $10.5 billion dollars a year (and growing because of so many ignorant people out there shopping at Wal-Mart), you would figure that it could invest some of that money back into the people that work there. Oh, some may cry out: "If it were so bad at Wal-Mart, these people wouldn't work there." Yea, great idea, except for the fact that if you go out into the rural counties, Wal-Mart has all but decimated local businesses: There is no where else to work but Wal-Mart. Do us all a favor and stop shopping at Wal-Mart, it's just not worth it.
