november 20, 2005The Cartoon Network was showing a terribly cut up version of Tim Burton's original Batman and my DVR caught it. I watched it and was amazed at:
- How over the top Jack Nicholson's performance was as the Joker.
- How awesome and memorable Danny Elfman's score was for the film.
- How dated Prince's music made the movie feel.
- How as a 14-year old kid, I could love the movie so much.
- How as a 30-year old kid, I find the movie a mediocre mess.
- How Michael Keaton is not Bruce Wayne.
- How Michael Keaton did not fit into the Batman suit.
- How Vicky Vale, when finding out the true identity of Batman reacts with...Well, nothing.
- How little Roger Ebert thought about the film (review).
- How dated the film looks and feels.
- How I still consider it a classic Burton film.
- How cool the Bat plane is, even with 1989 special effects.
- How distinct Gotham City was.
- How cool the Batmobile was in the film.
- How much I still love Elfman's composition titled Descent into Mystery. This is one of the most memorable film compositions I know of.
- How much I love Batman Begins when compared with Batman.
Anyways, those are just some thoughts that came to mind after watching Batman. I'll have to rent the film and watch it properly sometime soon. The film was released in 1989, I watched it multiple times in the local matinee cinema. I have watched it lots of times on VHS tape tape. But, I haven't really seen Batman in its entirety (or even in bits) for many years. Maybe it's time for a visit to the past.
