Got Lost

november 21, 2005

My wife got us the DVD set for Season One of Lost yesterday. We watched the Pilot (both parts) together again and was amazed by the sharpness of the picture and the quality of the 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound. We have Dish Network as our satellite TV provider. Although they are good, their highly compressed local channels really wrecks havok on picture quality. Each Wednesday we sit down at 9:30p (so that we can skip commercials on the DVR) to watch Lost, but we have never seen it as good as we have on DVD. The DVDs come in widescreen (1.78:1 ratio and anamorphic for better picture quality), which gives the TV show a very theatrical look and feel. The sound is well-balanced with crisp highs and floor rumbling lows -- and there is enough balance in the sound that the loud moments really carry a punch. But, it is not all about the tech behind the DVDs -- it is about the story, characters, and (at least for me) music. And on every front, the first season of Lost hit a homerun. If you haven't caught onto the Lost phenomenon, it is about time you did. Catching the first season on DVD is not a bad way of doing it either: no commercials, great picture quality, great sound, and no need to wait a week between each gripping episode!
