Thanks, But No Thanks

march 7, 2006

Here's a rule of life that anyone who uses the internet should always keep in mind:

What goes on the internet, stays on the internet.  Forever.
There's just no getting around that.  Whatever piece of information you put on the internet will stay there forever.  Whether you think that it is deleted or not, it is still there.  Such is the magically qualities of digital. Which brings me to some company who is soon going to try to convince people to mirror all the data on their computers to the company's server.  Better to quote direct from the company on how they wish to sell this idea:
"With infinite storage, we can house all user files, including emails, web history, pictures, bookmarks, etc and make it accessible from anywhere (any device, any platform, etc)."
This brings up some serious concerns about privacy.  This is especially in light of the US government trying to grab data from different internet companies.  And lets not forget about those hackers who would just love the idea that someone else's "files, including emails, web history, picturse, bookmarks, etc" would be "accessible from anywhere (any device, any platform, etc)". So, to that internet company, I say:  Thanks, but no thanks.  I'll keep my information to myself.
