Free .com From AOL

august 9, 2006

AOL is tossing around the idea of giving away domain names for free.  The catch is that you don't own the domain name that gets registered, AOL owns it.  The thought behind the idea is pretty good:  Registrars are selling domain names for as low as $6 per year.  If AOL gives you a domain name and hosts your webpage, it can tack on an ad to that webpage and try to make that $6 a year through advertising.  You also get 2GB of IMAP accessible email along with the deal.  Smart idea AOL, lets see if you can make it fly.
