Wal-Mart is trying to change its own image to...well...there's not much change.

Over the coming weeks, Wal-Mart will make the first change in four decades to its employee dress code at 3,400 stores nationwide. Out are the company's familiar blue smocks with the smiley-face logo. In are dark blue shirts and khaki pants. Just don't call the new look a "uniform." In a memo sent to managers and reviewed by BusinessWeek, the company states, "The new dress code is not a 'uniform.'"
A new uniform doesn't change the fact that Wal-Mart still treats their employees (yes, they are employees, not "associates") like crap. It doesn't change the fact that Wal-Mart is a hypocritical company (they won't sell Parental Advisory music, but hell, you can get a nice shotgun in sporting goods). And it can't change the fact that Wal-Mart is one of the worst companies around. Wal-Mart will never be an upscale place to shop. And Wal-Mart will never have that certain cool that Target has with the upper-middle class shopper. No...When you really look at what Wal-Mart is doing, you have to say to yourself: You can spray paint a pile of poo gold, but it will still be a stinking pile of poo.
