No Windows?

april 25, 2007

I was using my notebook at work and a coworker swung by to talk. He looked at my notebook and observed, "That isn't Windows." "Nope, it's Red Hat Enteprise Linux." "You installed Linux on your notebook?" Followed by puzzled look. "Yup." "You dual boot?" "Nope." "You mean you don't run Windows at all on the machine?" Puzzled look. "Yea, why should I?" It got quiet, then we moved onto another subject. When did Windows become the de facto operating system to run on PCs? Actually, is Windows the de facto OS to run on a PC? I don't think so. Other than hardcore gamers, it is hard to think of a reason why Windows should be installed on a system rather than any other OS.
