december 29, 2007I just finished watch a bunch of movies from Netflix. Wanted to write some quick notes about them.
- Superbad - Decent flick, not super-funny, but still entertaining.
- The Kingdom - Hoo-Rah! Americans rule! Well, at least that's the sense I get from this film. Not a particularly bad film, but not a particularly good film either. The film is tail-heavy with action. The first two-thirds of the film is dialogue heavy and it is not even that good of dialogue. I admit, the action ending was rousing if you turn off your brain and just go with it. The best thing about the film is Danny Elfman's score. I haven't heard Elfman do something along this line since Midnight Run -- the guitars and experimentation were all very cool. And Elfman even threw in some synths too boot. Awesome score.
- Mr. Bean's Holiday - Please, can I have my hour and a half hours back? This is a Rowan Atkinson skit that is an hour and twenty minutes too long.
- Spider-Man 3 - Please, can I have my two and a half hours back? Sam Raimi, you did such an awesome job with the first two Spider-Man films, why did you have to mess this one up? The "3" in the title represents the three (yes, THREE) villians in the film. Let me vent: 1) The Sandman is under-developed and under-utilized. I would have loved to see a movie just with him as the villain. 2) Harry Osborn has got to be the dumbest character on film. How many times can Peter tell him he didn't kill his father? Does Harry not get it? The new Goblin outfit is a bit...quirky. I kind of liked it, I kind of did not. It did not suit me well. 3) The most disappointing villain was Venom. Badly done and wasted. Who cast Topher Grace as Eddie Brock/Venom? Grace just does not fit the part at all -- especially as Venom, who seemed to have lost some muscle-mass going from comic to film. Sigh. That would not be the worst of it though, most of the two and a half hour running time is spent on the silly relationship between Peter and Mary Jane. Peter doesn't know women. Mary Jane continues to like Peter for reasons unknown. It doesn't help that Tobey Maguire can't pull off the heavy lifting when it comes to emoting. The dance sequence for Maguire was embarrassing, but not as embarrassing as Dunst signing. Spider-Man 3 lost sight of what made the first two so enjoyable: They were fun and they were exciting. None of that fun or excitement was present in Spider-Man 3.
- Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer - I really should have known better.
So, two "kindas" and three duds.
