If you're reinstalling Windows Vista from a non-SP1 disk disregard Microsoft's statement on their Windows Vista SP1 download page:
"DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A smaller, more appropriate download is available on Windows Update."
Sure, there is a smaller download: But, you will have to go through more than a half-a-dozen non-automated download-reboot cycles. And the downloading in Windows Update is slow, slow, SLOW. This adds up to hours of updating after initial installation.
Do yourself a favor and download the 400MB+ SP1 package from here. Put it on a CD or USB drive. After you install Windows Vista, run the SP1 package and it takes care of most of the updating with one reboot cycle. After that, I had to do one more online update that consisted of 200MB of downloads and one reboot cycle.
This was a lot better than having to go through the "recommended" route of letting Windows Update go about its pokey update routine.
