march 24, 2009emer-gen-cy: an unforeseen combination of circumstances or the resulting state that calls for immediate action.
That is the Merriam-Webster definition of "emergency". To use the work in context with an automobile would be "emergency blinkers", as in the lights that "blink" or "flash" when someone is having an emergency. So, for those selfish bastards out there, emergency blinkers should not be used for:
- A quick run to get a soy latte with whipped cream.
- To drop off a lazy friend who cannot walk from a parked car to the entrance of a building.
- To open your window and have a conversation with someone you know who happens to be walking down the street.
- To wait at the entrance of a mall for a random shopper to exit in order for you to follow them like a creepy stalker to their car.
Or anything else that does not involve:
- Your vehicle being unable to start.
- Your vehicle being on fire.
- You having a heart attack in the driver's seat.
- Anything else that can be classified as an "emergency".
So please, next time you have the urge to use your emergency blinkers for any reason other than a true emergency: Don't.
Thanks for not being a total ... well, you can fill in the word.
