Do Over?

april 5, 2009

With Facebook, I have discovered a whole load of friends and people I knew from high school again -- people that I thought would never see again after graduating high school some 16 years ago (Holy crap!  Has it been that long?).  I never went to my 10 year high school renunion, was busy and it didn't really appeal to me.
Seeing friends and people from high school now, I see that most of us turned out to be normal regular people.  All the cliques in high school seem to still be around (as witnessed by the friend lists of all).  Even so, all the teen angst, all the categorization of "cool" versus "not cool" have faded over time.

Some of us are successful in the academic sense -- graduated from high school, went onto big name university and did a masters.  Some of us are successful in our careers -- vice presidents, actors, musicians, engineers and whatnot.  Some of us are succesful in our family -- wives, husbands, kids, and maybe a dog or cat.  Some of us straddle all or two of the above. But, in the end we are all a little bigger, a lot older, and hopefully a lot wiser.

The question is, would you do high school over?

"They all have husbands and wives and children and houses and dogs, and, you know, they've all made themselves a part of something and they can talk about what they do. What am I gonna say? 'I killed the president of Paraguay with a fork. How've you been?'" -Martin Q. Blank, Grosse Pointe Blank.
