august 31, 2005Some of you will most likely not see ads on the site -- but they are still being run. I have added code to show the Yahoo! Publisher Network (aka. YPN) ads to specific visitors.
- A large leaderboard type banner will show at the top of the page only for people who come in from a Google search. My reasoning behind this is that most of my hits come from Google searches and they are people who aren't regular readers. I might as well show them a big ad once, since they probably won't return.
- A small banner ad will show between the main content and comments area for anyone coming from the outside world to one of the postings (not the front page). As I figure, these are people who come from other search engines like Yahoo! and/or news aggregators like My Yahoo! or Bloglines. I figure the news aggregator people are readers who come to read an article from time to time when the blurb interests them. Maybe an out-of-the-way ad would catch their attention. I don't want to annoy them with a huge leaderboard though, so a compromise of a smaller banner is what I think will work.
- Lastly, there will be no ads shown to anyone who visits the front page directly and anyone navigating within the site -- in other words if you came in via Yahoo! search, Google search, or an aggregator, then you won't see anymore ads after the initial page.
I don't like ads that much (I run AdBlock for my Firefox and PithHelmet for my Safari). I also know that I won't be quiting my day-job anytime soon with the light traffic I get on my site. But, I do like having the site generate a little bit of income and also promoting YPN. So, I guess this is a good way of having my cake and eating it too!
