may 14, 2011It's no secret that I have been dabbling with Android recently.
My first real time with Android was when I picked up a Samsung Captivate in December of last year. That was a very unfortunate first impression of Android because Samsung may make some awesome hardware, but they suck at software (details).
My second Android device was an el cheapo Android tablet, which was promptly returned for a Samsung Galaxy Tab Wifi. I decided to give Samsung a second run, this time as a non-critical device (a tablet with glitches is a lot less grating than a phone with glitches). The Galaxy Tab Wifi has turned out to be an OK device, though not completely rock solid.
Things I like about the Samsung Galaxy Tab Wifi:
- Solid hardware, feels good in hand.
- The screen is bright and the colors pop. And this isn't even an AMOLED screen!
- The battery seems to last forever.
Things that bug me about the Samsung Galaxy Tab Wifi:
- GPS is still broken, just like the most of the other phones in the Galaxy family. Could you not have fixed this already Samsung? The GPS functionality is completely broken: Takes forever to get satellite lock, then when it does, the location is often off by hundreds of feet.
- Random lockups.
- Samsung TouchWiz. I hate it. It is cartoony. It puts a background tile on all icons making Android look like iOS. Thank goodness Android lets me use third party launchers.
Last week, my Blackberry Torch broke (my fault), so I decided to replace it with an Android device. I picked up a Motorola Atrix 4G and have been using it for a week now.
Things I like about the Motorola Atrix 4G:
- Rock solid. No random lockups or reboots.
- Smoking fast.
- The screen is bright and very readable.
- Flash 10.3 works flawlessly and is as smooth as on a desktop.
- The biometric security actually works and works well.
- With a 4" screen, the Atrix 4G feels good in hand -- unlike the Samsung Captivate, which also had a 4" screen, but weirdly felt big in hand.
- GPS works and works well (eat that Samsung!)
- An honest to goodness notification LED that is multicolored!
- A built-in email client that supports IMAP PUSH properly.
- HDMI out.
Things that bug me about the Motorola Atrix 4G:
- Not Motorola's fault, but the "4G" speeds by AT&T are laughable -- usually in the 1-2Mbps range down and < 1Mbps up.
- Again, not Motorola's fault, but AT&T's lock-down of apps-only-from-Android-Market sucks.
- The Atrix 4G has a huge battery, but it does not last that long. Unlike the Blackberry Torch, the Atrix cannot go two days without a charge.
- MOTOBLUR. Why do I have to sign up for yet-another-account in order to use the phone?
- The plasticky build. While it feels solid in hand, Motorola could have made their flagship phone for AT&T a little more luxurious feeling with some better materials.
Things that don't interest me about the Motorola Atrix 4G:
- The overpriced laptop add-on.
- The overpriced multimedia dock add-on.
- The overpriced charging dock add-on.
Overall, I am really happy with my two Android devices -- most especially the Atrix 4G. Android runs great and is really flexible. There are still stuff I miss from the Blackberry platform:
- The hardware keyboard -- this is the biggest one. Onscreen keyboards work, but hardware keyboards work better.
- Universal inbox. Why Gmail is split out into its own app, or why the Gmail app can't do IMAP PUSH, I don't know.
- Blackberry Messenger. Those that haven't experienced BBM don't know, but those that have... well, you know that BBM is one addictive app -- quite possibly the killer app for the Blackberry platform.
What mobile platform are you on if you're using a smartphone?
