Running

october 20, 2013

saturday ten kayI like to run. I really do. It wasn't always this way though.

At first, I couldn't run at all since I was also 60lbs overweight and the extra weight made it quite hard to run -- my shins would hurt after even a minute of trying to run.

I started with walking only. I wrote down times and notes for each session and it is great looking back at the notes. I was proud that I could walk a mile in 20 minutes. Then I was proud I could walk a mile and a half -- and so on. There were also other notes that were sad, like in December 2011: "Stopped early because of lower-back pain."

Eventually, I lost weight through watching what I ate and exercising. I got myself to a point where I could run. I was slow at first, running a mile in 15 minutes -- that was a mix of running and walking. Then I got it down to a 12-minute mile. Then I got it to a run/walk 10-minute mile. Then I started running consistent 10-minute miles. But, I never got much distance. It was always a mile to a mile and a half.

Then one day, I ran two miles and it was great. Over the last few weeks, I have been trying to get more distance into my runs and I have worked from two miles to a 5k (3.1 miles) and am now running a 10k (6.2 miles) -- though, I haven't gotten to running for the entirety of the 10k. I can get five miles before walking. But, I am sure I will get to a point where I am running the entirety of a 10k soon.

When I get to running a full 10k without walking, I am going to work on getting faster. I can run a 5k in less than 30 minutes, but it takes me way longer to get to 10k -- at more than an hour.
